The indecision machine
This machine combines aluminum, wood and glass. It is made up of 16 light globes.
The Cell-ion Machine, imagined by phygital artist Arsen Eca, is not just a simple art object. It embodies an open door to experimentation, an immersion in the world of chance and decision-making. While operating according to defined logical principles, this machine generates unpredictable results, immersing the user in a sea of uncertainty. It serves as a bridge between humans and determinism, while presenting a tangible manifestation of indeterminacy, at the crossroads of the known and the unknown.
Arsèn Eca, the artist-researcher behind this project, sees art not as a simple representation of a research result, but as the very essence of research. The project aims to explore fundamental chance and predictive systems, questioning the reality of chance in our daily lives. The machine was recently updated to grant wishes and prayers, with an algorithm that promotes the granting of prayers based on the theory of strange attractors.
The history of the machine
Arsen Eca
In his studio in Paris
At the heart of the tumultuous intersection between art and technology, Arsen Eca’s Cell-ion project was born. The artist, recognized for his phygital approach, has always sought to combine the tangible and the digital, affirming that matter and information are one. In this context, the Cell-ion Machine emerges as an ode to this philosophy.
Eca’s inspiration comes from his thoughts on chance and decision. In a society increasingly smoothed by algorithms, where emotions seem to wither, he saw the need to create an interface between humans and determinism. This machine, although operating according to defined logics, generates unpredictable results, thus confronting the individual with indeterminacy, which perfectly embodies Eca’s vision of modern society.
The essence of the project is based on a deep question: does chance exist at a macroscopic level, in our daily lives? This question led Eca to design a machine capable of evaluating chance on a large scale, while being stimulated by a quantum pulse. The Cell-ion Machine is much more than just an art object; it is a tangible manifestation of this questioning, an invitation to experimentation and questioning.
Eca’s commitment to bold exploration is also visible in its collaborations, notably with Emochain, aimed at exploring the frontiers of crypto-art, prayers and emotions. The birth of the Cell-ion project is, ultimately, a celebration of the beauty that emerges when art, science and technology converge, providing a unique, poetic and deeply resonant experience.
